We’re down to the last two days of the campaign. I spent the weekend with our volunteers knocking on doors and making phone calls to remind people to get out and vote on Tuesday.
We’ve had a great grass roots campaign since the start. At a time when almost every major campaign has been built around slick television advertising, we’ve stayed with direct voter contact, and it shows every sign of paying off on Tuesday. If we do prevail, it could send a message to all kinds of candidates that even in a race for mayor of Wisconsin’s second largest city, direct voter contact is what works.
But we’re not looking past Tuesday. If there’s anything I’ve learned in politics it’s that Yogi Berra was right: it’s not over ’til it’s over. We’ve worked hard, and I believe we’ve won the debate over whether we should continue to move forward or go back to the politics of division and gridlock.
But my opponent is also out there working hard, and I believe the race is a lot closer than the pundits and experts think it is. So, we’ll keep working hard until the very last minute, and we hope to celebrate when the race is over.
