Just a few days left! by Mayor Dave

We’re down to a few days left in the campaign.  On Tuesday night, we had a get out the vote rally at the High Noon Saloon.  One of my favorite bands, Blueheels, played and my old boss Spencer Black gave a great speech followed by my good friend LaMarr Billups.  All of the candidates I’ve endorsed for City Council and School Board were there as well as a lot of old and new friends.  When I gave my brief speech I was proud to be joined on the stage by representatives of many of the unions that support me.  These kind of events are important for both our supporters and for the candidate.  At this point in the campaign many of us are running on fumes and getting together in an event like this helps us get recharged for the final push.  We’ll all be back at the High Noon on Tuesday for what we hope will be a victory party.

We’re down to the last week of the campaign and I’m almost over my cold, which I’ve had since the week before the primary.  I had the same thing four years ago, so I figure it’s good luck, but it has been hard to keep my voice through the series of forums we’ve had.  I think that by the end of the week we will have had something like 18 forums since the primary.

I have also been out knocking on doors every weekend.  This weekend we were in the Buckeye Neighborhood and in Midvale Heights.  Here’s something you might not think about: warm weather isn’t necessarily a good thing when you’re doing doors.  You warm up just fine anyway when it’s cold and without a coat it’s harder to store literature, pens and all the stuff you need when you’re out there.

Also, on the good news front, we got the editorial support of both The Capital Times and the Wisconsin State Journal – a rare thing.

The Smoke Clears by Mayor Dave

Today, I had another debate with my opponent, and the differences between us are becoming more clear all the time.  For the first time, he said directly that if the smoking ban were repealed by the city council, he would let the repeal stand, and if the Legislature tries to weaken our smoking ban, he won’t fight it.

My position is just as clear on the other side.  If the Council tries to weaken or repeal our smoking ban I’ll fight it, and I’ll veto any weakening if I have to.  And we’re already working with smoke free advocates and our legislative delegation to head off any state action that would weaken our ordinance.

In fact, just a few days ago I spent some time at the Harmony Bar where people of all ages were enjoying the atmosphere and the food and several of them told me that they wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t for our smoking ordinance.

Since it’s snowing (again), we thought it’d be fun to share this neat little tribute to Mayor Dave that one of our supporters on the near-west side built in the snow:
